Another similarity between the two sides is specifically the knights and the Samurai. For one thing, they contained the same basic social outline, with a shogun or noble at the top, knights or Samurai defending their people, and peasants to serve as the backbone for their respective societies. Japanese Samurai and the members of the feudal society both shared many common attributes. Both the European feudal times and the times of the Japanese Samurai were very similar, but also quite different.

The Samurai lived by their own code of ethics called Bushido, which valued honor, battle skills, and loyalty. (For more info on Meiji era, see previous entry). The Japanese Samurai also was a very honorable way of life, and Japan itself was excelling during the Meiji era. Chivalry was the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms. Knights were known for their gentlemanly conduct based on a code of ethics called chivalry.
A European knight during the Middle Ages was a man, usually of noble birth, who after an apprenticeship as page and squire was raised to an honorable military rank and bound to chivalrous conduct.
